JACKSON, Miss. – The Jacksonville State volleyball team made it four wins in a row Tuesday night, when it took straight sets (25-15, 25-23, 25-19) on the road at Jackson State.
The Gamecocks (16-9) are now winners of 15 of their last 19 matches, after opening the season 1-5. Tuesday was the second time this season that JSU swept the 2015 SWAC tournament champions.
Sophomore
Mackenzie Rombach, the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, played a big role in the Gamecocks earning the road sweep. The Ottawa, Ill., product hit a team-best .462 with eight kills, and contributed four of JSU's 14 blocks. Junior
Charis Ludtke also recorded eight kills, while classmate
Allyson Zuhlke led the way with 10.
On the defensive side, junir
Hannah Kirk collected 10 of JSU's 26 total digs as the Lady Tigers hit just .092 for the match with 21 attack errors. Freshman
Sadie Anderson had a steady night with four digs and four kills.
JSU fell behind early, but eventually built an 8-5 advantage and maintained the lead throughout the opening set. The Gamecocks reached a double-digit lead at 22-12, and held that margin for a 25-15 win.
The second set proved to be more of a challenge as the host Lady Tigers opening with a 4-1 lead. JSU responded with an 8-1 to claim the lead. Jackson State later called time trailing 20-14, but rallied back to cut the deficit to one, 23-22. Both team exchanged the final few points as the Gamecocks held on for a 25-23 second set victory.
In the third, it was finally the Gamecocks who took control early jumping out to an 8-2 advantage and forcing a timeout from the home side. The Lady Tigers refused to go away however, fighting back to a 13-11 margin. Jax State managed to stay in front through the end, but never by more than the four points it won by at 25-21.
The 16th win of the season comes two shy of JSU's 18 from 2014 during head coach
Terry Gamble's first season in Jacksonville. With a month to go in the regular season, JSU will face one more non-conference foe, and end the schedule with 10 more OVC matches.
JSU turns its attention back to Ohio Valley Conference action this week in preparation for a weekend road trip to Austin Peay and Murray State. The Governors and Racers are currently tied with Jax State at 5-1 in the league standings.
