MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Jacksonville State volleyball team fell 3-0 to host Morehead State Saturday afternoon inside MSU's Wetherby Gym.
The Gamecocks (17-15, 5-7 Ohio Valley Conference) dropped a tight opening set, 25-23, and were unable to get any closer to a win the rest of the day. The Eagles (11-15, 7-5 OVC) made it a weekend sweep after defeating Tennessee Tech on Friday.
MSU hit a dominant .453 for the match as the Gamecocks collected five blocks and only 18 total digs. Wetherby Gym has proven a challenge for Jax State, the Gamecocks are 1-9 in their last 10 games at the facility, including 0-3 in OVC Tournament matches against Tennessee Tech (2010), UT-Martin (2011) and Southeast Missouri (2012).
For the second-straight day, sophomore
Mackenzie Rombach was the bright spot in a struggling offense with 10 kills on 15 attempts for a .533 percentage. She added four of JSU's five team blocks. Freshman
Kaylee Frear added eight kills on a .400 hitting day.
JSU never led in the opening set, but came back from a 20-15 deficit to tie the match at 23. From there, MSU's Meredith Jewell, who finished with 14 kills, had a key put-away to push MSU back in front and on to a 25-23 victory.
Trailing 10-5 in the second, JSU rallied to even the score at 14-14, but again was denied taking the lead as the Eagles' Sydney Schuler's kill edged MSU back in front. The Eagles won the second, 25-20, and finished the day with a 25-18 third-set win.
The Gamecocks will have a chance to bounce back next week at home hosting Belmont and Tennessee State at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
