JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Head basketball coach Ray Harper announced the addition of forward Jason Burnell to Jacksonville State's early signing class Tuesday.
Â
A 6-foot-7 sophomore from Deland, Fla., Burnell joins incoming freshman Cameron Martin and fellow sophomore Maurice Dunlap as the third and final signee of the early period.
Â
Burnell played for Coach Jim Martin at Providence High School where he helped the Stallions to a 2015 FHSAA 3-A State Championship crown. His 26 points in the championship game earned him MVP status. He was also named second team all-state and first team all-county during his senior campaign.
Â
"Jason is another tall, strong kid we're adding to our program," Harper said. "He is a winner. He helped Providence High School win a Florida state championship and was named MVP of game. He brings high energy and intensity, and we've known about him for a long time. He has the chance to be special in this league. I call him a do-it-all-guy. He is a great defending, rebounding, high-energy basketball player."
Â
He spent his first collegiate season at Georgia Southern. He played in 24 games as a true freshman, averaging 7.7 minutes per game and 66 total points. He is currently playing at St. Petersburg College in St. Petersburg, Fla. In six games, he is averaging a whopping 19.0 points per game with 7.3 rebounds per game.
