JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – After opening the regular season Monday night with a resounding 64-point victory, Jax State Men's Basketball will make its first road trip of the season on Thursday night to Mobile to take on in-state foe South Alabama inside Mitchell Center at 7 p.m.
Â
The midweek bout will be the ninth meeting between the two programs, with South Alabama leading the overall series 5-3. In the most recent meeting in Mobile on Dec. 8, 2024, the Gamecocks fell 74-76 despite coming back from a 16-point deficit early in the second half.
Â
The Gamecocks (1-0) enter Thursday's matchup coming off a 123-59 victory over the LaGrange Panthers on opening night, matching the team's highest point total in a season-opener since Nov. 23, 1991, when Jacksonville State defeated Athens State 123-101 under legendary head coach Bill Jones.
Â
Against the Panthers, head coach Ray Harper's squad had no trouble finding the basket, as all 13 active players managed to score at least three points each, led by senior Jordan Stiemke's 17 points off a 6-for-11 shooting night from the field. Trailing just behind him was junior forward Alijah Curry's 16 points, featuring four three-pointers that he buried on four straight possessions in the second half.
Â
In all, six Gamecocks ended up in double figures, with 69 points coming off the bench. Jax State shared the wealth effectively as well, dishing out 27 assists as a team, led by Chris Lockett Jr's career-high 10 dimes.
Â
Defensively, Jax State looked just as strong, holding LaGrange to shooting just 17-for-52 (33 percent) from the field and 4-for-21 (19 percent) from beyond the arc. Additionally, the Gamecock defense forced 26 turnovers that turned into 33 points on the other end.
Â
The Jaguars (0-1) enter the matchup after an opening day loss to Ohio at home on Nov. 2, falling 77-86 to the Bobcats. Despite the loss, former NAIA All-American transfer Jalen Langsy  put up 25 points in his Division I debut, shooting 9-for-18 from the field with three triples.Â
Â
South Alabama gave up 16 three-pointers to Ohio in the losing effort, only hitting six itself. Additionally, the Jaguars only managed a 17-for-28 (61 percent) shooting night from the free throw line.Â
Â
Next up for Jax State is a challenging road trip to No. 10 Houston inside the Fertitta Center on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+
