MOBILE, Ala. – In Jax State's first double overtime contest in 39 games, the Gamecocks came out on the losing end this time, dropping an 80-83 battle to the South Alabama Jaguars inside Mitchell Center on Thursday night.
Â
Head coach Ray Harper's squad held a 10-point lead with 1:26 to go in the second half, before the Jaguars closed the final stanza with an 11-2 run to force the first overtime. Despite being red hot from beyond the arc throughout regulation, the Gamecocks were only able to sink one of their last six three-point attempts in both overtime periods in the losing effort.
Â
"I felt like we gifted it," Harper said. "The game would've been over if we would've just held onto the ball and made free throws. And, we didn't make free throws like we needed to tonight."
Â
As a team, Jax State shot 10-for-17 (59 percent) from the free throw line, compared to South Alabama's 12-for-17 (71 percent) rate from the stripe. In both overtimes, the Gamecocks shot 6-for-10 from the line while the Jaguars sank all four of their foul shots.
Â
Jax State managed to mount a nine-point lead at the half, courtesy of Jordan Stiemke's 14 first half points, along with Chris Lockett Jr. contributing 12 himself. The duo buried four three-pointers each in the opening frame. Lockett carried the hot hand from deep in the second half as well, sinking another four triples to finish his night with 25 points. Stiemke went on to lead Jax State with a career-high 27 points off 8-for-18 shooting from the field.
Â
In the first overtime period, the Gamecocks combated South Alabama's lone scorers in the frame, Jalen Langsy and Stephen Williams, with a three from Naas Cunningham and a trio of free throws to fend off the Jags to the buzzer. In the second overtime, Stiemke managed to score all but two of the Gamecocks' eight points, but it was not enough to overcome a 9-0 run by South Alabama in the period.
Â
Overall, Jax State shot 27-for-64 (42 percent) from the field and 16-for-39 (41 percent) from three, compared to the Jaguars shooting 33-for-71 (47 percent) and 5-for-27 (19 percent) from beyond the arc.
Â
Jax State will play one of its toughest teams on the schedule next week as the Gamecocks take on No. 10 Houston inside Fertitta Center on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
