JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team welcomes fans to dive into the holiday spirit at their annual "Christmas with the Gamecocks" game against Nicholls State this Sunday, December 18.
Â
The women host the Colonels at 1:30 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Admission is free to all and children will have opportunities to win prizes from the Gamecocks throughout the day. The JSU Cheerleaders and COCKY will also part of the festive atmosphere on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Prizes will be given away during halftime and following the conclusion of the game. Gifts range from bikes and JSU apparel to an array of other items. Fans may also stick around postgame as the Gamecock ladies will make their way to the main entrance lobby to sign team posters following the action.
Â
For the contest, JSU enters the weekend on a four-game win streak after posting a 70-66 victory at Alcorn State on Tuesday. Against Nicholls, the Gamecocks will aim to secure their first five-game win streak since December of 2014.
Â
Senior Briana Benson leads the offense averaging nearly 14 points per game. She matched a season-best with 21 in the win over Alcorn State earlier in the week, and moves just 19 points shy of becoming the 11th member of JSU's 1,000-Points club. However, the race is on as fellow senior Destany McLin also sits with an identical 981 career points total and could also eclipse 1,000 in any game now.
Â
Inside-threat Tyler Phelion follows Benson as another leading scorer for an offense averaging 66 points per game, and more than 72 per game during their recent four-game streak. On the defensive side, Jax State leads all Ohio Valley Conference schools in scoring defense while holding opponents to 37 percent shooting from the floor, and 28 percent from beyond the three-point arc.
Â
Following Sunday's "Christmas with the Gamecocks," JSU will host ACC-foe Clemson on Wednesday, Dec. 21, in the final non-conference matchup of the season.
