SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Malcolm Drumwright's last-second three from the top of the key led the Gamecocks to a 67-66 win over USC Upstate on Sunday.
Â
With less than three seconds left, Upstate's Malik Moore hit a free throw to put his team ahead 66-64.
Derrick Green's inbound pass found Drumwright with his back to the basket. The junior jumped, spun and fired the trey through as the buzzer sounded.
Â
It was the first buzzer beater hit by a Gamecock since
JaQuail Townser drained a game-winning three against Winthrop on Dec. 2, 2014.
Â
The junior scored a team-best 18 points en route to the Gamecocks' seventh win of the season. He was one of four to register double-digit points, while
Erik Durham and
Christian Cunningham each posted a double-double. They became the first duo to accomplish the feat since Jamal Hunter and
Jeremy Watson on Nov. 22, 2014 against Miles College.
Jacksonville State struck first and took a 4-0 lead on baskets from
Norbertas Giga. JSU stretched the lead to 9-5 before hitting a 7-0 run. The lead reached double-digits as
Jacara Cross pitched in five points during the short span, but Upstate hit a run of its own to cut the lead back to five.
Â
The Spartans made it a 17-12 contest at the 11:02 media timeout thanks to a three-pointer from Josh Cuthbertson, and they were able to claim their first lead of the day just two minutes later. A 6-0 run put Upstate ahead 19-18 with less than five minutes to go in the half, and the two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the period. Upstate led 31-30 at the break.
Â
The Gamecocks and Spartans continued to exchange the lead in the second half until Jacksonville State found another gear. Following the under-12 media timeout, head coach
Ray Harper's defense began to press the Upstate offense. The press forced back-to-back turnovers and began a 10-0 JSU run.
Â
Jacksonville State tied the game 50-50 before claiming its first lead of the half one minute later. It pushed its lead to a half-best six points at the 8:08 mark and did not trail again until the final 30 seconds.
Â
JSU in back in action Wednesday to take on Chattanooga. Tipoff at McKenzie Arena is set for 1 p.m. CT.
