SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Jacksonville State softball team rallied from a 6-0 deficit to tie College of Charleston but fell 7-6 to the Cougars on Day Two of the Savannah State Lady Tiger Invite.
A six-run fifth inning for the Gamecocks (2-1) was capped by a three-run home run from senior
Ella Denes, but the Cougars (2-0) used an unearned runin the top of the seventh to hand JSU its first loss of the season.
The Cougars used a big inning of their own to take control of the game early on. They plated five runs in the third, when Dana Horgan broke the scoreless tie with a two-run shot and Carly Hansis finished the frame with a three-run shot.
The two blasts chased Gamecock starter
Faith Sims from the circle and set the stage for fellow freshman
Kirsten Titus (0-1) to make her collegiate debut. She tossed 4 1/3 innings of relief and allowed two runs, just one earned, on four hits, while striking out three.
Her first run allowed came in the top of the fifth and put the Gamecocks in a 6-0 hole. That's when the JSU bats went to work.
In the bottom of the frame,
Taylor Sloan's pinch-hit RBI double got the Gamecocks on the board.
Whitney Gillespie followed with an RBI double of her own to make it a 6-3 game and set the stage for Denes' first homer of the year.
The senior from Pisgah, Ala., drilled reliever Brittany Violette's 3-2 pitch over the wall in left to erase the deficit and tie the game at 6-6.
A scoreless sixth set up the top of the seventh, when a one-out single by Rebecca Mueller set up a fielder's choice that saw her reach second on an error by second baseman
Jordan Bullock. The error extended the inning and allowed a two-out RBI single by Valerie Cassell that won the game.
JSU got a one-out single from Denes in the home half of the seventh, but a line drive off of the bat of
Cadi Oliver was snagged by shortstop Kelly Sinclair, who doubled off Denes at first to end the game.
Cassell (1-0) earned the win in relief after three scoreless innings of one-hit softball that saw her face the minimum.
JSU will conclude the opening weekend Sunday at 12 p.m. against Drexel.
