JACKSONVILLE – With three games left in the regular season, the Jacksonville State women's basketball team will play two of the three games at Pete Mathews Coliseum, beginning with a Wednesday contest against Eastern Kentucky. Tip off is set for 6:30 p.m.
JSU students and fans 18 years and under receive free admission.
The Gamecocks, still jockeying for one of the eight spots in the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Women's Basketball Tournament, enters the contest in a three-way tie for the final spot in the postseason event with Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech with a 5-8 OVC mark. The Colonels are 13-10 overall and 7-5 in the league.
JSU and the Colonels will be facing each other for the second time this season. The Gamecocks claimed the first meeting between the two clubs, 56-54, in Richmond on January 27. The Wednesday tilt will be the 28th meeting between the two programs with Eastern Kentucky holding an 18-9 lead in the series that dates back to the 2002 season.  Jax State will be looking for its fifth consecutive win over EKU as it claimed the season series in 2014-15. A win would be the first time in the 28-game series that JSU has won five consecutive games against the Colonels. The Gamecocks will be looking for back-to-back wins over EKU at Pete Mathews Coliseum for the first time in the series.
In the last five games, which includes the win over EKU in Richmond, Kentucky, the Gamecock defense has bolstered its spot atop the league in two defensive categories. Jax State leads the OVC in scoring defense as it has limited the opposition to 56.8 points per game and ranks first in the OVC in field goal percentage defense at .374 percent. In the last five games, JSU has held all five foes to under 60 points and a scoring mark of 52.4 points per game. The defensive effort will be challenged by an EKU team that enters Wednesday's contest averaging 72.6 points per game.
Offensively, Jax State Briana Benson continues to carry the club in scoring with an 11.9 scoring average. Benson is inching closer to the program's all-time three-pointers made career list after draining three Saturday at Tennessee Tech. Benson stands second all-time with 153 and needs four more to match Shneka Whaley's (1995-99) mark of 157. The Jonesboro, Georgia guard ranks as the top free throw shooter in the OVC as she has connected on over 90 percent from the charity stripe this season. In OVC games only, she is a 92 percent shooter at the line. Benson turned in a team-best 17 points in the first meeting with the Colonels.
Sophomore Tyler Phelion also had a solid game against EKU with 14 points in 36 minutes of action. The Mobile, Alabama post plater is coming off her fourth double-double of the season after collecting a career-high 16 rebounds and 12 points at TTU. In the last five games, Phelion is averaging 9.4 points per game and grabbing 7.3 rebounds per contest.
Jax State will make its second trip to Nashville on Saturday, February 20, facing the Lady Tigers of Tennessee State. Â
