LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Jacksonville State softball team split a pair of games at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic on Saturday, downing College of Charleston 6-4 before dropping a 9-0 decision to No. 10 Georgia.
In the first game of the day against College of Charleston, the Gamecocks overcame an early 2-0 deficit and then answered a late comeback to get their second-straight win.
Senior
Cadi Oliver gave JSU its first lead of the game with a three-run homer in the third, while junior
Stephanie Lewis drilled a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth that proved to be the game winner. Oliver was 2-for-3 with a homer, double and three RBI in the win.
The Cougars got a pair of runs in the top of the first on JSU starter
Casey Akenberger, but a bases loaded walk by junior
Jamie McGuire got one back in the home half of the inning.
Junior
Taylor West entered the game in relief in the second and held the Charleston offense at bay to allow her offense to battle back. They finally grabbed the lead on Oliver's big blast that followed singles from McGuire and
Whitney Gillespie and put JSU up 4-2.
An RBI single from Kelly Sinclair and a sac fly from Carly Hansis tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth, but the Gamecocks didn't take long to jump back on top.
After an error by pitcher Samantha Martin put Gillespie on to lead off the inning, Oliver followed with her two bagger. The double set up Lewis, who delivered the game-winning two-run double to center.
West (2-1) worked around a one-out walk in the seventh to secure the win. She allowed two runs on three hits in six innings of relief work. She walked two and struck out four.
Martin (1-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings that also saw her fan four batters. Sara Garcia and Valerie Cassell each went 2-for-3 to lead Charleston at the plate.
No. 10 Georgia jumped on the Gamecocks in the second game of the day and never looked back. The Bulldogs scored four in the bottom of the first, with the big blow of the inning coming on Alex Hugo's two-run double.
JSU starter
Faith Sims held the Bulldog bats in check over the next two innings before a five-run inning broke the game open. An Alyssa DiCarlo two-run double and a two-run single from Kaylee Puailoa accounted for most of UGA's production in the inning.
Sophomore
Emily Woodruff went 1-for-2 with the Gamecocks' lone hit off of Georgia starter Brittany Gray, who struck out two and walked two in four shutout innings.
Sims suffered the loss after surrendering nine runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings in the circle for JSU.
Kirsten Titus recorded the final two outs of the fourth, striking out one in the process.
JSU will wrap up the tournament on Sunday, when they face Elon at 9 a.m. CT and No. 1 Florida at 11:15 a.m. CT.
