JACKSONVILLE –
Greg Tucker played Saturday like it was his last of the season.
In Jacksonville State's basketball finale for 2015-16, the junior from Charleston, Mo., scored an historic 36 points, but his Gamecocks (8-22, 4-11 Ohio Valley Conference) fell 82-71, just short of the season sweep of Morehead State.
His career-high output was the most a Gamecock has ever scored in Pete Mathews Coliseum since JSU moved to Division I in 1995 and it was one point shy of the school's Division I scoring record of 37 set by Trenton Marshall at Southeast Missouri in 2010.
Nonetheless, the Gamecocks saw their season come to an end at the hands of an Eagles (17-11, 10-5 OVC) team they upset in Morehead, Ky., in late January. A determined MSU squad escaped The Pete with a win in a sloppy game that saw 50 total fouls and secured a bye and the No. 3 seed in next week's OVC Tournament in Nashville.
Tucker led the way for the Gamecocks, going 9-for-14 from the floor and 7-for-11 from behind the arc. He was also 11-for-15 from the free throw line.
Senior
JaQuail Townser, one of three Gamecocks playing in their final game on Senior Day, scored 14 and dished a team-high three assists. The team's other senior,
Jeremy Watson, pulled down a team-high seven boards and scored five points.
Nathan Laing, a sophomore in eligibility but senior in the classroom, also suited up for the final time and will earn his degree this semester.
The Eagles were led by Xavier Moon's 25 points in a 7-for-10 shooting day. The guard from just down the road in Goodwater, Ala., also pulled down seven boards.
