
Giraldo Leads JSU at MSU, Named OVC Golfer of the Week

SORRENTO, Fla. – Freshman Valentina Giraldo not only led the Jacksonville State women's golf team this week, she was also honored as the Ohio Valley Conference Female Golfer of the Week.
The native of Ibague, Colombia, finished second in a field of 118 competitors at the Morehead State Spring Citrus Challenge in just her fourth tournament as a Gamecock. The performance was set up by a school-record 65 on Sunday that put her in the early lead and ended up helping JSU to a sixth-place finish in the 20-team field.
That record-breaking opening round set the JSU record for low round and for low round vs. par and included eight birdies and just one bogey.
Giraldo finished the 54-hole event on the par-72 RedTail Golf Course with a 1-under 215, just one shot behind medalist Kelsey Badmaev of Elon, who carded a 2-under 214. Giraldo trailed by a shot going into the final round but both players shot even-par 72 in on the last day. Western Kentucky tied Elon for the team title.
Senior Melania Bajo Geijo tied for 18th with a three-day score of 226, shooting a pair 74s sandwiched around a second-round 78. Freshman Karina Kukkonen and sophomore Natalia Azcue tied for 57th with a 54-hole score of 234, while junior Angie Varona tied for 101st with a total of 274.
The Gamecocks have just one tournament remaining before the OVC Championships n mid-April. They will compete in the Appalachian State Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate from April 3-4 at Mimosa Hills Country Club in Morganton, N.C.
