Clayton Daniel Named 2016 Louisville Slugger All-American

TUCSAN, Ariz. – Jacksonville State sophomore second baseman Clayton Daniel has been named a Louisville Slugger Third-Team All-American as selected by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, announced by the publication on Thursday.

Daniel joins a select few in the JSU program as he becomes just the third Gamecock to earn All-America honors in multiple seasons.  The Guntersville, Alabama product was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American after a stellar freshman season in 2015.  Daniel joins former Gamecocks Clay Whittemore and Stewart Lee as multiple All-America selections.  Whittemore was a two-time selection in 2007 and 2008, while Lee was a three-time honoree in 1986, 1987 and 1988.

Daniel, a constant offensive contributor in 2016, led Jax State at the plate with an overall batting average of .372 and was the only player to start all 58 games.  He collected 93 hits, including 23 extra base hits as a sophomore and drove in 54 runs, which ranked second on the team.  Daniel had at least one hit in 54 of the 58 games this season, including a hit in 33 of JSU's 34 games against Ohio Valley Conference competition.  Against OVC foes, he batted .390 with 57 hits in 146 plate appearances.  Prior to the start of the 2016 NCAA Baseball Tournament, JSU leads the NCAA in doubles (145) and doubles per game (2.5) and Daniel was the catalyst in that category this season.  He finished the season with a team-best 20 doubles, including 15 against OVC pitching.  He has also had multiple hits in 27 of JSU's 58 games along with 16 multiple RBI contests.  Daniel put together the OVC's longest hitting streak of the season with 22 consecutive games with a hit.  Daniel was statistically the toughest player in the OVC (and ninth nationally) to strikeout (one every 19.2 at-bats) while also ranking ninth nationally in hits.

After ranking among the offensive leaders in the OVC, Daniel was named First Team All-OVC and collected All-OVC Tournament honors after helping the Gamecocks reach the championship round of the 2016 OVC Baseball Championship.  In the four games JSU played in Jackson, Tennessee, Daniel was 7-for-19, including a pair of doubles and tallied three RBI.

Daniel was among three OVC standouts to receive national honors as Southeast Missouri's Joey Lucchesi was named to the Louisville Slugger First Team and Tennessee Tech's Keven Strohschein joined him on the third team.  He was one of six players that were named 2016 Louisville Slugger All-American that were listed as a 2015 Freshman All-American – LHP Tyler Wilson, Rhode Island, RHP James Karinchak, Bryant, 3B Carl Stajduhar, New Mexico, OF Tyler Jones, Air Force and UT Brendan McKay, Louisville.
