LORMAN, Miss. – The Jacksonville State volleyball team swept Alcorn State (25-11, 25-9, 25-11) on the road Tuesday evening in its final tune-up before conference play begins.
The victory was the 10th of the season for JSU, marking the first time the Gamecocks have notched double-digit wins prior to conference play since 2004.
Juniors
Charis Ludtke and
Allyson Zuhlke led JSU's offense, each hitting plus .400 with eight kills. Sophomore
Mackenzie Rombach and freshman
Kaylee Frear both added six kills. Rombach also pitched in three block assists and a trio of service aces. Freshman
Rachel Perucki guided the offensive attack dishing 18 assists.
Junior
Hannah Kirk finished with 10 digs, followed by sophomore
Katie Will who had seven, and freshman
Maddie Cloutier who ended the night with six. Ludtke and Frear proved to be a force up front helping the Gamecocks collect seven total blocks, improving the nation's No. 1 blocking team's total.
The Gamecocks (10-8) pulled away from a tight first set following an Alcorn timeout at 11-8. JSU used a 10-2 run to break away and take the opening frame, 25-11. The second set saw ASU jump out to a 4-2 advantage, but another big streak – this time 12-3 – gave the Gamecocks a 14-7 lead. JSU hit .458 in the second set overall on its way to a 25-9 victory.
The third was a continuation of the first few frames as JSU hit .500, held their opponents to a .043 attack mark and pulled away for a 25-11 victory to complete the road sweep.
"It was nice to get this win tonight heading into conference play," said head coach
Terry Gamble. "Right now we want to get a little healthier as we move into the schedule, we' have some injuries right now that we hope to get those kids back soon."
Jax State now sets its focus upon Ohio Valley Conference play which starts this weekend as the Gamecocks host Morehead State on Friday night and Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
