NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State volleyball team was unable to complete the season sweep of perennial conference power Belmont on Friday night, falling on the road by scores of (19-25, 25-20, 18-21, 21-25).
The Gamecocks (22-12, 8-7 Ohio Valley) had their four-match winning streak snapped in the loss, and now head into the final day of the regular season on Saturday with a lot to play for with tournament seeding on the line.
The Bruins, also 8-7 in OVC play, move into a three-way tie for fifth-place with JSU and Eastern Illinois. In tiebreaker scenarios, JSU would fall behind both BU and EIU if the three remain even following Saturday's outcomes.
Belmont was paced Friday even by Ariana Person who posted a match-high 24 kills while hitting .345. The Bruins won the first set (25-19), but Jax State bounced back to take the second (25-20) and carry a 1-1 match score into the locker room.
A 5-1 stretch in set three gave the Bruins separation from a 12-12 tie and allowed the home team to grab a commanding 2-1 match lead in a 25-18 decision. The Bruins capped the match with a 25-21 win in set four.
Seniors Allyson Zuhlke and Charis Ludtke each reach double figures in kills for the Gamecocks, but it wouldn't be enough. Sophomore Rachel Perucki had a team-high 22 assists, while senior Hannah Kirk registered 15 digs.
JSU continues play in the Music City tomorrow at Tennessee State in a 1 p.m. match. Live stats are available at JSUGamecockSports.com.
