Gamecocks Open Spring Schedule With Win at Samford

BIRMINGHAM – Jacksonville State's women's golf team got its spring season off to a solid start on Monday, when the Gamecocks won the Samford Spring Shootout.
The first win of the 2016-17 season for the Gamecock women came in impressive fashion. JSU opened the 36-hole event on the par-72 layout at Greystone Golf & Country Club with a 302 and held a 0n3-shot lead over the host Bulldogs with 18 holes to play.
The Gamecocks dropped their score by eight shots in the final round, using a 294 to pull away from Samford and finish eight shots ahead of the Bulldogs. Western Kentucky finished third, ahead of Dalton State, Alabama State and South Alabama, respectively.
Sophomore Valentina Giraldo led the Gamecocks, claiming a second-place finish in the 49-player field, just two shots off of medalist Melanie Talbott of Auburn. Giraldo, a native of Ibague, Colombia, opened play with a 1-over 73 and closed with a 74 to shoot 147 over the two rounds.
Giraldo led a group of four Gamecocks in the top 11 spots on the individual leaderboard and was just one shot ahead of fellow sophomore Karina Kukkonen's 148. The Oulu, Finland, native opened with a 76 and rallied with a final-round 72 to climb six spots into a tie for fourth.
Sophomore Paula Vega had an impressive debut for the Gamecocks after joining the team for the spring semester. The Medellin, Colombia, native finished ninth after an opening round 76 and a final-round 74 gave her a 36-hole score of 150.
Freshman Pia Ohlenbusch tied for 11th for JSU, carding a 78 and 74 for a two-round score of 152. Senior Angie Varona rounded out the JSU lineup in a tie for 18th with a 153. She shot 77 to open before closing with a 76.
Two Gamecocks competed as individuals, with freshmen Layne Dyar and Chloe Borders finishing 35th and 40th, respectively. Dyar shot 159 (83-76), while Borders turned in a 163 (80-83).
The JSU ladies return to the links on Feb. 20-21, when they compete in the Amelia Island Collegiate at Amelia Island Golf Course in Amelia Island, Fla.
