JSU Game Notes
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team welcomes Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Kentucky to Pete Mathews Coliseum Wednesday night as the Gamecocks look for a third-straight victory.
Â
JSU (12-14, 5-9 OVC) remains in the hunt for a spot in next month's OVC tournament in Nashville, Tenn. The Gamecocks have matched a season-best two game win streak in conference play with back-to-back double-digit victories over Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech to rally late in the league standings.
Â
The Colonels (9-18, 6-8 OVC) currently sit just ahead of Jax State in position for a postseason seed. Wednesday night's contest will likely eliminate one team from tournament contention.
Â
Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at The Pete. JSU students and fans ages 18 and under receive free admission. For those unable to attend, the contest will be streamed on the OVC Digital Network and broadcast on the Gamecock Sports Network with Mike Parris on the call.
Â
JSU's league-best scoring defense has held opponents to an average of 61 points this season. The Gamecocks are looking to finish atop the OVC in that category for the third-straight year. On the offensive end, senior Lacey Buchanon is averaging more than 12 points per league contest and is coming off consecutive 20-point outings during JSU's two-game streak.
Â
Leading scorer Briana Benson surpassed 300 points for the year in JSU's win over Tennessee Tech. The Jonesboro, Ga., native moved to eighth all-time on JSU's career scoring list with 1,160 points. She currently sits 10th in OVC history with 207 made three-pointers, just three shy of the next name on the list.
Â
Tyler Phelion and Rayven Pearson have combined to create on of the better rebounding duos in the conference. As a whole, JSU ranks second in defensive rebounding percentage behind only league leader and unbeaten Belmont.
Â
The Colonels lead the all-time series against Jax State, 19-10, but the Gamecocks have won five of the last six meetings overall with head coach Rick Pietri owning a 5-2 record against EKU.
Â
JSU will wrap up its regular season on Saturday at Morehead State. To reach the OVC Tournament, the Gamecocks most likely need to win their remaining two games and have Austin Peay fall to either Southeast Missouri or UT Martin during this final week of the season. Â Â
