RICHMOND, Ky. – A late Eastern Kentucky goal in the second overtime session was the difference in Jacksonville State's 1-0 double overtime loss to the Colonels of EKU on Friday afternoon in Richmond, Kentucky.
The Gamecocks, who were playing in their sixth extra session contest of the year and the third double overtime match this season, dropped to 3-10-2 overall and 1-6 in OVC play. The win pushed EKU over the .500 mark on the season at 7-6-2 and notched its third OVC win of the season. The match was just the third overtime contest in the series between the two clubs and the first since a scoreless draw in Richmond in 2015.
EKU's Erin Torrence connected on the game-winning goal in the 106th minute off of a free kick after JSU was whistled for a foul. Torrence's shot was a direct shot in to the bottom left corner of the net.
After both squads combined for 14 total shots in regulation, the Colonels capitalized on their 15th and final shot. Jax State posted eight shots, including four in the second half and one in each of the two extra sessions.
With depth a concern, head coach
Neil Macdonald saw a great effort from his club on Friday afternoon.
"Our girls gave everything they had today," said Macdonald. "Cheyenne (Carden) had a great game, winning headers with stitches in her forehead from an injury last Sunday. We had great attitude and mentality from the entire team."
JSU created opportunities throughout the first half and had a few solid chances to put the first goal on the scoreboard. Senior
Claire Petersen, who had two of the Gamecocks' eight shots, had one of her shots rattle off the bar from about 25 yards out.
Senior
Madison Carruthers joined Petersen with multiple shot attempts with two, including one on goal chance.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Morgan Lerch came up just short in her bid for a fifth shutout of the season. Lerch collected eight saves against EKU.
JSU will look to rebound on Sunday with an afternoon contest at Morehead State. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. CST at MSU's Jayne Stadium. The match will be available on the OVC Digital Network.
