
Gamecocks Finish Third at Pinehurst Challenge

FINAL RESULTS
PINEHURST, N.C. – The two seniors on the Jacksonville State women's golf team tied for 10thand the Gamecocks finished third at the Pinehurst Challenge on Tuesday.
JSU shot a 300 in the final round, while seniors Paula Vega and Valentina Giraldo capped 54-hole totals of 221 on Tuesday. The Gamecocks completed the 17-team tournament with an 895 on the par-72, 6,040-yard Pinehurst No. 6.
North Florida won the event, just ahead of host College of Charleston. The Gamecocks finished ahead of a fourth-place tie between UNCG and High Point.
Vega and Giraldo, both Colombian natives, led JSU for the tournament again. One of the two has been the Gamecocks' low scorer in each of their tournaments this fall.
Vega, from Medellin, Colombia, shot a final-round 76 on Tuesday capped her 221, while Giraldo, of Ibague, Colombia, used a 77 to put the finishing touches on her tournament.
Sophomore Ana Perez Altuna had JSU's best round of the day, carding a one-over 73 to move into a tie for 36th. The native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, carded a 54-hole total of 228 and climbed 19 spots up the 92-player leaderboard on the final day.
Freshman Claire Vermette shot 79 on Tuesday to wrap up her 49th-place 231, while junior Chloe Borders turned in her best round of the week with a 74 on Tuesday. She made a 13-spot jump on the leaderboard to tie for 60th.
Syndey Shrader of UNF won medalist honors, shooting a 5-under 211 that was capped by a 71 on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks' next event will be Oct. 21-23 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Kiawah Island, S.C. The event will be played at the Turtle Point Golf Course and will be hosted by Charleston Southern.
