MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. –
Alexus Jimmerson's complete-game and her go-ahead single in the sixth led the Jacksonville State softball team in handing Lipscomb its first loss of the season in splitting on day two of the Easter Michigan Madeira Beach Spring Invitational.
The Gamecocks (5-5) rode Jimmerson's arm and her big swing to their 2-1 win over the Bisons (5-1). She went 3-for-4 and homered in the second game before JSU fell 10-2 to UMass. The Minutemen broke open a close game with seven runs over the final three innings.
In the opener, Jimmerson and Lipscomb starter Jordan Fortel kept the bats at bay early on, with Fortel carrying a no-hitter into the fifth. That bid was broken up by
Hayley Sims, who placed a 3-2 pitch into center for a one-out single and gave the Gamecocks their first baserunner of the day.
Lipscomb followed JSU's first hit with its first run in the home half of the fifth, when an error allowed a run to score and the Bisons to take a 1-0 lead.
JSU had its answer in the sixth, a frame that was started by a 1-out
Emily Woodruff single and an error that allowed
Anna Chisolm to reach and Woodruff to scre and tie the game.
Taylor Beshears followed with a single and then Jimmerson's infield single plated Chisolm and put the final run on the board.
After recording the go-ahead RBI, Jimmerson (2-0) tossed two more scoreless frames to grab the complete-game win. She allowed the one run on eight hits and struck out two.
Fortel (1-1) gave up a pair of unearned runs on four hits in her seven-inning effort, one that also saw her strike out seven and walk none.
In the final game of the day, UMass grabbed three early runs in the top of the first to post an early 3-0 lead, but JSU cut into it in the bottom of the third with back-to-back homers from Beshears and Jimmerson.
UMass got another run in the fifth to extend its lead to two and then broke the game open with two in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Faith Sims (3-2) suffered the loss in the circle for JSU after allowing four runs on five hits and four walks in 4 and 1/3 innings of work.
Kirsten Titus allowed six runs, three earned, on five hits in her two innings of relief, while
Nicole Rodriguez recorded the final two outs.
Quinn Breidenbach (1-1) earned the win for UMass in relief, holding JSU scoreless on one hit in four innings. She struck out four and didn't issue a walk.
The Gamecocks will wrap up play in the tournament on Sunday, when they face Ohio at 8 a.m. CT.
