KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Valentina Giraldo moved into sole possession of first place in the nation's largest collegiate women's golf tournament on Monday.
The Jacksonville State junior from Ibague, Colombia, fired a bogey-free, 4-under 68 on the par-72, 5,964-yard Oak Point Golf Club in Monday's second round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic. She takes a one-shot lead over the field of 218 players into Tuesday's final round of the 54-hole event.
Her round of 68 on Monday tied the sixth-lowest round in school history, a score she has now carded four times in her junior season. Giraldo now holds four of the 15 lowest rounds in school history and also is 18 holes away from her third win of the season.
She led the Gamecocks to a team score of 291 on Monday, tying the fourth-lowest round in school history. JSU is now in a tie for fifth in the 43-team field, the largest women's tournament in the nation.
