
Giraldo Wins Third-Straight As Gamecocks Finish Third

MAUMELLE, Ark. – Consistency and another first-place finish from Valentina Giraldo helped the Jacksonville State women's golf team to a third-place finish at the Little Rock/ASU Invitational on Tuesday.
Giraldo, a junior from Ibague, Colombia, shot a final-round 71 and finished the 54-hole event with a 2-over 218 to tie for medalist honors with three other golfers. With her third-straight first-place finish, she led the Gamecocks to rounds of 298, 298 and 299 to finish third in the 10-team event.
The Gamecocks finished four shots behind second-place Northern Illinois and 17 back of champion UTEP. The Miners used a three-round score of 878 on the Maumelle Country Club to lead from wire-to-wire.
Giraldo shot the second-best score in the field on the par-72 layout on Tuesday and made the largest jump in the final round. She climbed from eighth into the lead in the final 18 holes and led the field in pars for the tournament with 41.
It's the junior's third-straight and fifth win in eight tournaments this season, one she entered without a collegiate win in her career. She has finished in the top 10 in every event played, including one runner-up finish and two eighth-place finishes.
Junior Paula Vega tied for 16th for the Gamecocks, thanks to a final-round 75 that capped a 54-hole 226 for the tournament. The Medellin, Colombia, native recorded 11 birdies during the tournament, the most of any player in the 57-player field.
Sophomore Pia Ohlenbusch tied for 22nd after her 54-hole score of 231. She shot 83 on Tuesday. Freshman Valentina Curet's 80 on Tuesday capped a 232 that tied her for 25th, while sophomore Chloe Borders tied for 36th with a 235. She rallied on Tuesday with a final-round 73 that helped her jump 11 spots on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks have one more tournament remaining on the regular-season schedule, the Jan Weaver – MSU Invitational at the Miller Golf Course in Murray, Ky., from April 6-7. They will then play the Ohio Valley Conference Championship at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala., from April 16-18.
