MURRAY, Ky. – The Jacksonville State soccer team suffered a 4-0 setback to reining Ohio Valley Conference champion Murray State on Sunday afternoon at Cutchin Field on the MSU campus.
The Gamecocks dropped to 3-7-2 on the season and 1-3 in OVC matches. The Racers improved to 8-2-1 overall and 4-1 against the OVC. After a weekend on the road, Jax State will return to the home pitch next weekend, hosting Belmont on Friday evening and UT Martin next Sunday. Admission to the JSU Soccer Field is free.
After falling 4-1 on Friday night at Austin Peay, the Gamecocks put together a solid team effort and bounced back from the opening match of the weekend. The Racers took advantage of its scoring opportunities.
MSU took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute with a goal by Symone Cooper. The Racers would hold that advantage throughout the final 31 minutes of the first half despite having 12 of their 25 total shots in the first half.
The Racers pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute after Abby Jones netted the second goal. MSU's Elizabeth Tilton and Miyah Watford capped off the scoring in the 67th and the 83rd minute.
JSU finished with seven shots, led by
Abigail Martinez, who had two coming off the bench. Junior
Cheyenne Carden,
Emma Meadows and
Adrianna Karpa were credited with shots.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Morgan Lerch collected six total saves with three coming in each half.
