JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team gets set to host Murray State in a mid-day matinee on Thursday for its annual Kid's Education Day game.
The Gamecocks (9-10, 3-5 Ohio Valley Conference) will tip-off against the MSU Racers (5-13, 2-6 OVC) at 11:30 a.m. inside Pete Mathews Coliseum in front of a packed audience that will include more than 1,000 schoolchildren.
JSU hopes an energetic atmosphere will be just what it needs to shake its three-game home losing streak. Senior Destiney Elliott had her highest scoring game since December 2 last Saturday with 17 points at Morehead State. That, along with sophomore Taylor Hawks' nine double-digit scoring games this season will likely lead the offense against the Racers who have lost four straight entering Thursday's contest.
After splitting the road trip last weekend, JSU sits in eighth place at the midway point of the conference season.
The Gamecocks will lean on their defense once again against MSU with JSU ranking as the 14th best defense in the nation in opponents shooting percentage. Jax State's scoring defense ranks second in the conference and 40th overall allowing just 57.4 points per game, 11 points below the Racers offensive average. On the boards, senior Rayven Pearson continues her strong season averaging 9.8 rebounds per game. She had 13 in each of the last two games and moved to fifth on the school's all-time career list with 730 rebounds. With eight more on Thursday she'll pass Danielle Vaughn (2007-2011) for fourth all-time.
The early tip time marks the 25th meeting between the two schools. The Racers lead the series, 17-7, but JSU has found more success of late winning five of the previous six matchups. In JSU's 97-65 win over MSU at The Pete last year, the Gamecocks matched a Division I program record with 41 made field goals.
