Golden Eagles Hold Off Gamecocks

JACKSONVILLE – Tennessee Tech's goal in the 33rd minute of the opening half was the difference in Jacksonville State's loss to TTU on Sunday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Field.

The Gamecocks dropped to 3-12 on the season and 0-7 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while the Golden Eagles capped off the weekend with two wins and pushed their overall mark to 6-5-4 and 4-1-2 in OVC action.  TTU handed OVC frontrunner Murray State its first loss on Friday.

TTU's Kendall Powell turned in the game winner after getting behind the Jax State defense and finishing the scoring chance that was set up by Meg Ivey.  The Golden Eagles finished with 13 total shots, while limiting JSU's chances to four.  The two clubs combined for seven opportunities in the first 45 minutes, while the Golden Eagles looked to add an insurance goal in the second half with nine shots.  JSU's Morgan Lerch corralled eight saves on the day.

"It was a good team performance, but we made a bad mistake on their goal, but overall the team competed well for 90 minutes," said head coach Neil Macdonald.

After playing 109 minutes on Friday night, the defensive effort was there and thwarted many Tech opportunities with the play of the young JSU backline.

"I thought our back four were excellent both in and out of possession," noted Macdonald.  "Considering they are made up of three true freshmen and a true offensive player, they have done really well.  The young players have been brilliant, and I am excited about our future."

Four Gamecocks had a look at goal throughout the contest that turned dreary late in the game with a steady rain.  Freshman Cynthia Bagozzi, seniors Nadia Plawiuk and Cheyenne Carden recorded shots, while Cephana Deane added a shot coming off the bench.

"Cynthia Bagozzi was a standout for me.  She never stopped moving and is a real handful for the opposition." Added Macdonald.

JSU will close out the home portion of the schedule next Friday, hosting the Racers of Murray State.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field.  Admission is free to all JSU soccer home matches.  The match will also be available on ESPN+, the online streaming platform of ESPN.
