
Vermette Leads Gamecocks at Palmetto Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Sophomore Claire Vermette shot her second round under par in the Palmetto Classic on Tuesday and finished 14th to lead the Jacksonville State women's golf team.
Vermette capped a 54-hole 217 (+1) on the par-72, 6,005-yard Turtle Point Golf Course with a final-round 71 to finish in the Top 15 in the 114-player field. The round came just two days after the St. Petersburg, Fla., native posted a career-best 68 to lead after the first round.
She led the Gamecocks to a three-day total of 902, finishing 13th in the 22-team event. JSU carded a 305 in Tuesday's final round. Host College of Charleston won the event with an even-par 864.
Vermette carded 15 pars and two birdies in Tuesday's round, climbing six spots on the leaderboard after a second-round 78 on Monday dropped her to 20th. The two sub-par rounds were her first two rounds under par this season.
Senior Javiera Espinosa Vallerina and junior Ana Perez Altuna each tied for 59th in the field after shooting 54-hole scores of 228. Espinosa capped her tournament with a Tuesday 77, while Altuna closed with a 79.
Junior Valentina Curet shot 78 on Tuesday to put the final touches on her three-day 231 and tied for 71st, while senior Layne Dyar tied for 78th with a 233 that was finished off by a final-round 79.
Troy's Nicole Lorup won the event with a 9-under 207.
The Gamecocks have one event remaining on their fall schedule, the UALR Women's Golf Classic in Hot Springs Village, Ark., from Oct. 27-28.
