HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark. – Sophomore Claire Vermette fired a final-round 71 to claim her best career finish and lead the Jacksonville State women's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Little Rock Golf Classic on Tuesday.
Vermette, a native of St. Petersburg, Fla., shot her second round under par in as many days to cap a 1-under 215 in the three-day event. The total ties her for the 10th-best 54-hole score in school history and helped her climb four spots on the final day.
One day after carding a 2-under 70 in the second round, Vermette used a streak of four birdies over five holes to set the tone for her round. She entered the weekend with two rounds under par this season and doubled that total with her performance at the par-72, 6,088-yard Diamante Country Club.
It was her first career top-five finish and was seven shots behind medalist Valeria Mendizabal of UTEP. Western Kentucky won the 17-team event at 12-over par, while the Gamecocks finished fourth with a three-day score of 890 (26 over). They were just four shots behind third-place California Baptist and nine back of runner-up Bradley.
The trio of juniors Valentina Curet and Ana Perez Altuna and senior Layne Dyar all tied for 26th in the event with 54-hole scores of 225. Curet and Dyar each shot 76 in the final round, while Altuna turned in a 77. Senior Pia Ohlenbusch rounded out the JSU lineup in a tie for 85th after a final-round 81 capped a 241.
The tournament wraps up the fall schedule for the Gamecocks, who will begin their spring schedule in February.
