JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team is set to host its annual Education Day game on Tuesday when the Gamecocks welcome the Lipscomb Lady Bisons to Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Â
JSU (1-1) is coming off a 72-67 victory over Florida A&M on Saturday in the home opener of the season. Junior Kiana Johnson set a new career-high with 16 points in the win, just behind junior Taylor Hawks with 17. While defense has been a staple of the Gamecocks for a long time, Jax State has shown in the early going that it can navigate on offense just as well. JSU put up 66 on the road at Southeastern Conference member Vanderbilt in the season-opening setback, that came after JSU reached triple-digits in its exhibition contest.
Â
Graduate-student Destiney Elliott is shooting 46-percent from beyond the three-point stripe to open the season, and is one of seven different Gamecocks to hit a three in the first two games.
Â
Lipscomb brings an 0-1 mark into Jacksonville, still looking for the first win of the new head coach Lauren Sumski's young career. The Bisons fell at Dayton in their first contest, after their initial season-opener was cancelled with the upcoming closure of Cincinnati Christian, who was previously set to play Lipscomb. Tuesday marks the sixth all-time meeting between the two schools. JSU won in Nashville, 58-46, last November to cut LU's series advantage to 3-2.
Â
Tuesday's game will tip at 11:30 a.m. as part of JSU's annual Kid's Day. The Gamecocks will welcome more than a 1,000 local school students to The Pete from surrounding grade schools. The matchup will broadcast on ESPN+ and will air across the Gamecock Sports Network with Mike Parris on the call. Live State can also be found at JSUGamecockSports.com. Â
