Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

JSU Falls at Vanderbilt in Opener on Tuesday

NASHVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team fell on the road to Vanderbilt, 88-66, to begin the 2019-20 season on Tuesday night.

Trying to pull off their second-straight win over a Southeastern Conference foe, the Gamecocks (0-1) trailed by just three at halftime following a strong start to the contest. The Commodores (1-0) however stayed sharp throughout the game, shooting 52-percent from the field, to pull away late in the second half.

Senior Destiney Elliott led Jax State with 18 points and seven boards. The Oneonta, Ala., native, matched a career-best hitting five three-pointers on the night. The deep ball was friendly to the Gamecocks early as JSU opened 7-of-8 from downtown, triggering a big second quarter. Junior Taylor Hawks finished 2-of3 three from beyond the arc as part of her 12 points. Freshman Nekiyah Thompson added 11 points in her collegiate debut to round out JSU's double-digit scorers.

Senior Brittany Webster finished with six points and two boards, but a couple of early first-quarter baskets helped JSU through slow points and hang around in the first. The Commodores would hit a three in the closing minute to take a 25-12 lead into the second quarter.

Vandy took a 30-14 lead early in the second quarter, but back-to-back triples from Elliott quickly brought the margin back to 10 and forced a VU timeout. It would become an 11-0 run altogether to pull within five. Later, McKenna Lawrence who bury a deep shot to cut it to a 38-34 game. With just over three minutes remaining in the half, Jayla Walker knocked down a three of her own to pull within two at 42-40. The Gamecocks would head to the half down just 44-41.

A barrage of seven-straight made three-pointers for JSU fueled a 29-point second quarter, marking the second-highest scoring period for JSU since the women's game moved to quarters four years ago.

Unfortunately, the second half would not see the same shooting success for the Red and White. A five minute scoring drought to open the third swung momentum back to the home side who would tally their second 25-point period of the game to take a 69-54 lead into the final 10 minutes. The lead would eventually settle at 22 as Vandy claimed the 88-66 decision.

The 88 allowed is a rarity for JSU, even against top competition. It's the most given up by the Gamecocks since UT Martin scores 94 in the OVC opener on Dec. 29, 2016.

JSU will return home to host Florida A&M on Saturday.
