KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Jacksonville State women's golf team saved its best round for its last day at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic, where a final-round 289 tied the Gamecocks lowest round in school history and propelled them seven spots into a tie for 14th place.
The Gamecocks shot a school-record 289 for the fourth time and the first since 2012 at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate. They turned in a 289 twice in the Great Smokies Women's Collegiate in 2010-11.
The round bested JSU's previous low round of the three-day event by 15 shots on Tuesday, when the Gamecocks climbed into a tie with Georgia Southern for 14th in the 49-team field. They were the highest finishing Ohio Valley Conference team in the field, with Tennessee Tech tying for 33rd and Murray State claiming 38th.
Senior Paula Vega was the Gamecocks' top individual in the 54-hole event, tying for 28th in the 254-player field. The tournament was played on the Osprey Point Golf Club and the Oak Point Golf Club, both in Kiawah Island. Coastal Carolina and North Florida tied for the team title, while UNF's Sydney Shrader won medalist honors.
On the final day, the Gamecocks played Osprey Point, where junior Pia Ohlenbusch had the best round of her JSU career. The native of Nurnberg, Germany, carded her first sub-70 round as a Gamecock with a 4-under 68 that saw her card seven birdies. She bounced back after rounds in the 80s the first two days and jumped 60 spots into a tie for 156th. It was the third-largest jump in the entire field on Tuesday.
Vega was the most consistent for JSU over the three days, shooting her second 71 in three rounds on Tuesday. A second-round 77 was the big number in her 219 that led the Gamecocks.
Freshman Claire Vermette tied for 55th for JSU after a final-round 74 put the finishing touches on a 54-hole 224. Sophomore Ana Perez Altuna shot 76 on Tuesday, capping a 227 that tied her for 86th. Fellow sophomore Valentina Curet's 78 followed a Monday 77 and placed her in 25th after her opening round didn't count.
The Gamecocks return to action on Monday in Jacksonville, Fla., where they will compete in the UNF Collegiate on the Jacksonville Golf and Country Club.
