Gamecocks Fall to Alabama on Thursday Night

JACKSONVILLE – Alabama scored three goals in the second half to post a 3-0 win over Jacksonville State on Thursday night at the JSU Soccer Field.

The win by UA moved its overall record to 4-2-1, while the Gamecocks dropped to 3-4 on the season and will look to bounce back on Sunday in their final non-conference outing of the season on Sunday against the Bears of Mercer.  Match time is set for 5 p.m.

After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the Crimson Tide registered the first goal of the contest quickly out of the halftime break with a goal by Brynn Martin after Taylor Morgan and Bella Scaturro lined her up for the netted ball.  UA expanded the lead with two goals within a seven-minute span from the 61st minute to the 68th.  Casey Wertz and Riley Mattingly recorded the two insurance goals.

UA controlled the pace of the game with a 20-2 edge in total shots with a balance of 10 in each half.  Senior Nadia Plawiuk and freshman Cynthia Bagozzi had a shot each for Jax State.

With limited depth, the Gamecocks pushed through against a Southeastern Conference opponent.

"I am really proud of the performance and obviously its tough with 13 players total and to come out and compete against that kind of a quality team is encouraging," said head coach Neil Macdonald.  "They stuck to the game plan and were very disciplined.  There was tremendous commitment, so I am pleased with the overall performance under difficult circumstances."

Despite the outcome, Macdonald thought his club put together one of the best performances of the year from a discipline and work ethic standpoint.

"I have to give our back four a ton of credit, especially Alicia Pallister, who played back there for the first time in over a year.  She looked like a true leader out there and I thought Emma Meadows and Cheyenne Carden played well," mentioned Macdonald.

Sunday's non-conference finale will be available on ESPN+, the online streaming platform of ESPN.  Admission is free to all JSU soccer matches.
