JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team wrapped up the opening weekend of Ohio Valley Conference play with a 1-0 setback to Morehead State on Sunday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Field.
The Gamecocks fell to 3-7 on the season and dropped the first two OVC outing by identical results after Friday's 1-0 loss to Eastern Kentucky. The Eagles moved to 2-6-1 overall and finished the conference weekend with Sunday's win, coupled by a 1-1 draw with Tennessee Tech on Friday.
MSU delivered the game-winning goal in the 65th minute off the foot of Eva Kiper. Kiper turned in her first goal of the season with a look from 20 yards from the goal. The Eagles held a slim 12-9 margin in total shots as Jax State had a plus-two advantage in shots in the second half. The Gamecocks had chances for the first goal and opportunities to equalize following MSU's go-ahead goal.
"It was another good effort from the girls and a played with a great attitude," said head coach
Neil Macdonald. You could tell that we were really tired today from Friday's game with some of our passes off."
Freshman
Cynthia Bagozzi turned in a match-high six shots, including two on target shots in 90 minutes of action. Seniors
Emma Meadows and
Cheyenne Carden along with sophomore
Cephana Deane had the three other shots.
"I say it every game, but Emma (Meadows) is just a workhorse for us and she seems to cover ever blade of grass on the field. I think it was a good team performance overall," added Macdonald.
Jax State will welcome the lone match for the upcoming week with limited numbers available. The Gamecocks will travel to SIU Edwardsville on Sunday for a contest with the Cougars.
"We have an extra day to get healthy and see if we can get a few players back and go up there and compete."
