Gamecocks Edged By Troy on Thursday

TROY, Ala. – Jacksonville State freshman Cynthia Bagozzi netted her third goal of the season on Thursday against Troy to equalize, but a Trojan goal in the 76th minute pushed the Trojans past the Gamecocks, 2-1, at the Troy Soccer Complex.

The tough setback dropped JSU to 2-3 overall, while Troy remained unbeaten on the season at 3-0-2.  Jax State will continue its string of matches against in-state competition on Sunday in Montgomery against the Hornets of Alabama State.  ASU dropped a 5-0 decision to UAB in Birmingham on Thursday night.

After the two clubs played to back-to-back scoreless draws in 2017 and 2018, the Trojans broke the scoring deadlock right before the halftime break.  Troy's Nilou Asdigha netted the first goal of the match in the 40th minute.

Another strong second half performance by the Gamecocks allowed them to equalize the match five minutes deep into the half as Bagozzi delivered the tying goal.  The Orlando, Florida native took the assist from sophomore transfer Cephana Deane.  The assist was Deane's first as a Gamecock.  Bagozzi's goal moved her into third on the Ohio Valley Conference's list of goal scorers this season.

"I thought we played really well tonight.  It was a good team performance in difficult circumstances with all the injuries that we have had," said head coach Neil Macdonald.  "I really thought we had a great second half again and we will need to build off this effort heading into Sunday's match."

Troy regained the advantage in the 76th minute with Grace Mirly's go-ahead and eventual game-wining goal.  Troy's Kiersten Edlund was credited with an assist on both Trojan goals.

"Cephana Deane had a great game and she caused their defense a lot of problems in the second half," mentioned Macdonald.  "Emma Meadows controlled much of the game with her passing in the midfield."

Sunday's outing with the Hornets is set for 1 p.m. on the ASU campus.
