
JSU Hoops: Jacksonville State vs. Tennessee State on Thursday

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's and women's basketball teams host Tennessee State at Pete Mathews Coliseum on Thursday. The women's game begins at 5:15 p.m. with the men's contest to follow at 7:30 p.m.
Thursday is Greek Spirit Night. The Greek organization with the most spirit at the end of the night will win $100. It is also Transfer Night at JSU, hosted by the Office of Admissions and Dean of Students.
Both games will broadcast live on ESPN+ and be available online through ESPN on WatchESPN, and the women's contest will broadcast on ESPN+. Visit espn.com/watch or download the ESPN app to view the games on a computer or mobile device.
Fans can also listen to "The Voice" of the Gamecocks, Mike Parris, on the Gamecock Radio Network and online. Parris is entering his 37th season on the mic for Jacksonville State basketball.
Jacksonville State will be in action again Saturday against Belmont. The women tip at 1:45 p.m. with the men to follow at 4 p.m. The Leeds Jumpers will perform at halftime of the men's game, and the 1985 NCAA Div. II National Championship team will be recognized on the court. Saturday is also America's First Credit Union Kid's Day.

• Kayne Henry was named the OVC Newcomer of the Week for the second week in a row on Monday after totaling 30 points, 24 rebounds, a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line and a double-double.
• Henry set his career-high for points scored and rebounds in a single game Jan. 25 against Morehead State. The junior tallied 23 points with 16 rebounds against the Eagles.
• The Gamecocks' 72-51 win over Morehead State was their first home win at Pete Mathews Coliseum since downing Carver College 120-56 on Dec. 28. Jacksonville State is now 1-3 at Bill Jones Court in OVC play.
• Jacksonville State enters tonight's game trailing Tennessee State 18-14 in the series, but the Gamecocks are 4-2 against the Tigers in their last six meetings.
• Jacksonville State recently added Georgia transfer Amanze Ngumezi. The 6-foot-9 forward played seven games with the Bulldogs as a sophomore before transfering to JSU. He will be eligible for competition for the 2020-21 season. More about Ngumezi can be found on page three of this notes package.

- JSU (8-11) enters Thursday contest at 4-4 in Ohio Valley Conference play, looking to move back over .500 against a Tennessee State (2-16, 0-8 OVC) team that's seen early struggles this year.
- It's the first matchup between the two schools this season as JSU moves into the second-half of its league schedule with five new opponents upcoming for the final 10 regular season games.
- Junior Taylor Hawks led Jax State with 17 points last Saturday in the setback to Morehead State. She's averaging a team-high 11.5 points during OVC games, while graduate Destiney Elliott leads the offense with 12.4 points per game overall.
- JSU is second in the league allowing 54.5 points, and could have a strong day against the Lady Tigers who average nearly 58 points. Only Morehead State and Austin Peay have scored more than 55 against Jax State through eight conference contests.
- The last time these two met, Taylor Hawks hit a 30-foot buzzer-beater in overtime to hand JSU a thrilling 76-73 victory.
