With Covid-19 forcing the 2020 volleyball season to the spring of 2021. The Jacksonville State program wanted to introduce its freshmen throughout a short series titled "Across the Net" where the JSU community can learn more about the newest members of the roster before the February start date.
Â
This week's spotlight freshman is Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, native, Tahya Pozorski.
Â
In the top conference in Wisconsin, she helped lead Oconomowoc High to a pair of Division I state championship appearances, including a 39-4 season as a senior. So, the obvious question becomes just how does a 5-foot-5 star defensive specialist find herself 800 miles and 12 hours south in Jacksonville, Alabama. Â
Â
"(Coach Garvey) found me at one of my old USA Camps when I did three years of that. He first saw me there and then he would come to more of my tournaments throughout my junior year and he just kept in contact with me and wanted to me to come here."
Â
The deciding factor was once she was able to see JSU in person on her recruiting visit.
Â
"I loved it, honestly. I thought the campus was so pretty and I like how it's just warmer down here because Wisconsin is freezing. The girls were super nice and I just fell in love with it right away."
Â
Yes, along with a beautiful campus and friendly environment, the climate played a part as well.
Â
"It's so much better. I mean I like (snow) when it's not there if that makes sense. I'll be like 'oh I love winter, it's so pretty,' but that's when I'm in summer."
Â
Just as intriguing as how Pozorski ended up at Jax State is how she finally settled on volleyball as her sport. She did gymnastics as a small child, but thought she wanted to play tennis when she was older, until her dad ultimately helped her find her way with volleyball.
Â
Any Pets?
"I have four dogs and three cats at home, so we are definitely an animal family."
Â
What's your pandemic binge-watch show?
"I love Grey's Anatomy, that's probably my favorite show. I watched it twice already. I also watch Young & Hungry, but I'm more of a movie person. Anything with Adam Sandler in it."
