With Covid-19 forcing the 2020 volleyball season to the spring of 2021. The Jacksonville State program is introducing its freshmen class throughout a short series titled "Across the Net" where the JSU community can learn more about the newest members of the roster before the February start date.
Â
This week's spotlight freshman is Sellersburg, Indiana, native, Macie Garrison.
Â
Garrison played at Silver Creek High under head coach Jeff Zimmerman. JSU's newest setter recorded 3,820 assists throughout her prep career and was a three-time all-state selection. A News and Tribune and Courier Journal nominee for Player of the Year as a senior, she led the SCHS Dragons to more than 100 total wins, three-straight sectional championships and back-to-back regional championships.
Â
At JSU, she rejoins a familiar friend in fellow freshman Courtney Glotzbach. The two played club volleyball together in Louisville for years.
Â
"We were on the same team 13's year and we've been on the same team since, it's been a while."
Â
Garrison says the two only briefly discussed their potential to continue being teammates at the next level.
Â
"A little bit, we were both off doing our own thing and it just happened that we were both looking at JSU, I didn't go to her and she didn't come to me."
Â
"I got to visit once, before I committed, and I got to be with the team and watch them play two of their games and I just loved the energy."
Â
Among others offers, Garrison chose JSU over conference foe Southeast Missouri and Northern Illinois. As a setter, the "quarterback" of the offense already has her sights set on what she intends to study.
Â
"I really like electrical engineering, my mom actually does that, and all throughout high school I took engineering classes. I don't know, I've just always been interested in it. I like math, I like problem-solving, so that's why I'm drawn to it."
Â
Though she's played volleyball since the third grade, the 5-foot-9 Hoosier says she ventured into other sports as well when she was young.
Â
"I played basketball and softball growing up, but both of those careers died in middle school so it wasn't that serious."
Â
Any Pets?
"I have a dog named Max, pretty basic. He's a brittany spaniel. Â
Â
What's your pandemic binge-watch show?
"My favorite show is Supernatural, but I binge-watched a lot of Criminal Minds over quarantine. I'm really good at quoting movies and TV shows, I just have a knack for memorizing stuff like that."
Â
Garrison and the rest of the Gamecocks are a month away from finally beginning the preseason for their long-awaited return to court to follow up their OVC title season from 2019. JSU opens the 2020-21 season on Feb. 7 at Belmont.
