Across The Net: Sadie Brown - Jacksonville State University Athletics

With Covid-19 forcing the 2020 volleyball season to the spring of 2021. The Jacksonville State program is introducing its freshmen class throughout a short series titled "Across the Net" where the JSU community can learn more about the newest members of the roster before the February start date.

This week's spotlight freshman is Dublin, Ohio, native, Sadie Brown.

Brown prepped at Dublin Coffman High, a school that's produced numerous professional athletes, including current Fox Sports analyst, Brady Quinn. Attending a school with a large enrollment, and playing for a program with high standards makes the transition to JSU slightly easier, according to Brown who says it doesn't feel like much of a change.

"I wanted to come to a smaller school just because I didn't want to be overwhelmed by 'big colleges' and I didn't want much of a difference from my high school. I think the biggest difference is the location. I was in a big town like 15 minutes away from downtown Columbus, and now it's a small town in Alabama, so that's taken some adjusting."

For someone who calls herself a "City Girl," Brown says the adjusting is ongoing, but she's excited to get things officially started next semester.

At DCHS, Brown played for head coach Mary-Anne Souder. Named team MVP and third team all-state as a senior, she helped lead the Shamrocks to an undefeated conference championship. The 6-foot-1 Gamecock middle blocker finished her prep career with 486 kills, 110 blocks and 22 aces with a .266 hitting mark. She also played club for Mintonette Sports in Powell, Ohio for four years.

When deciding on her next step, she says JSU's team chemistry from the coach down to her new teammates made things feel right.

"When I was talking to (Coach Garvey) early on, he was always nice and worked with my schedule for when I could talk with him. Then when I got here (for recruiting visit) I just really liked the campus. When I would hang out with the girls on the team they were all so nice and I just loved how it was all together, like a family."

Any Pets?
"I have an overweight cat and a dog, a boxer," Brown said jokingly.

What's your pandemic binge-watch show?
"I don't watch a ton of TV shows, but I spend a lot of my time scrolling through videos on tik-tok. That was most of my quarantine time."

Brown and the rest of the Gamecocks are less than two months from their long-awaited return to court to follow up their OVC title season from 2019. JSU opens the 2020-21 season on Feb. 7 at Belmont.
