Gamecocks Set to Visit Georgia on Wednesday Night
12/8/2020 3:21:00 PM | Women's Basketball
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team takes its unbeaten record on the road for the first time this season with a visit to the University of Georgia on Wednesday night.
Â
The Gamecocks (2-0) aren't the only ones with an unblemished mark entering the contest as the Lady Bulldogs (4-0) are off to a strong start of their own. The two programs will meet for the first-ever meeting in a 6 p.m. CST tip-off from UGA's Stegeman Coliseum.
Â
Georgia becomes the seventh different Southeastern Conference member that JSU has faced since the move to Div. I in 1995. The Gamecocks' most recent Power Five win came on the road at Ole Miss on Dec. 2, 2018.
Â
JSU has been led offensively through the first two games by junior Yamia Johnson's 14-point scoring average. The Lexington, S.C., native, is one of three Gamecocks currently averaging double figures along with senior Kiana Johnson and junior Imari Martin. Martin, a junior college transfer, was just named Newcomer of the Week by the Ohio Valley Conference following her 14-point effort off the bench against New Orleans last Saturday. Directing the offense will be senior guard Taylor Hawks, who is poised to start her 86th consecutive game at the point for JSU.Â
Â
On the boards, Kennedy Gavin (10) and Jessie Day (11) have each grabbed double-digit rebounds in a game to start the year. JSU's two home wins to open 2020-21 came by average of 14.5 points after the Gamecock defense held its opponent to under 60 both times. UGA hasn't scored less than 66 in any of its four wins so far this season.
Â
Wednesday's contest will stream on SEC Network+ with Matt Stewart and Christy Thomaskuttyon the call. JSU's Mike Parris will have play-by-play coverage over the air across the Gamecock Sports Network affiliates. Live stats are available at JSUGamecockSports.com.
