JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's women's basketball team hits the road for the final time during the regular-season as it gets set to take on Tennessee State, Thursday evening in Nashville.
The Gamecocks (12-15, 8-8 Ohio Valley Conference) are looking to extend a six-game winning streak over the Lady Tigers (4-22, 2-14 OVC). Earlier this year JSU defeated TSU, 70-48, at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Now, JSU aims for the season sweep in an effort to move up the conference standings in the final weekend.
Jax State sits sixth in the OVC entering the final weekend of action. The Gamecocks are locked into their third-consecutive OVC Tournament, every year since the tournament moved to the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana, in 2018. A way win would maintain the sixth seed, and possibly open the door to the chance at earning the fifth seed in the season finale. The Aside from having to play the top two seeds, the fifth and sixth spot will receive an extra day of rest and play on Thursday, March 5, while the seven and eight-seed teams will open play on Wednesday, March 4.
Graduate Destiney Elliott's team-high 12.5 points per game leads the Gamecocks on the offensive end, just ahead of junior Taylor Hawks with an 11.8 ppg average. The two have combined for 94 of JSU's season-record 184 three-pointers for the year. On the glass, redshirt-senior Chloe Long is closing in on 200 rebound on the season. The Hazel Green, Ala., native, is top 10 all-time at JSU with 679 career rebound as she gets set to suit up for her 125th game on Thursday.
JSU leads the series 21-16 since its recent six-game streak dating back to 2017. A win on Thursday would even the series on the road at 9-9 in contests played in Nashville.
After its bout with TSU, the Gamecocks will return to The Pete on Saturday, February 29, for the season finale against Tennessee Tech for Senior Day.
