
JSU Downs UT Martin, Preps for OVC Rifle Championships

MARTIN, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State rifle team tuned up for the 2021 Ohio Valley Conference Rifle Championships with a visit to UT Martin on Sunday.
The Gamecocks posted a 4611 aggregate score and bested the Skyhawks by 53 as the host tabulated a 4558. JSU's air rifle mark carried the squad with a 2334 and added a 2277 in smallbore. Sunday's match wraps up Jax State's weekend of competition as it turned in its second-best aggregate score of the season with a 4655. The 2020 OVC Rifle Championships will be held on Feb. 6-7 on the Morehead State campus in Morehead, Ky. The championship will mark the first hosted by the league in the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19 with the fall sports moved to the spring semester.
Freshman Lars Lilleng led a quartet of Gamecocks that clamed the top-four individual spots. Lilleng, from Rade, Norway, posted an 1156 to win medalist honors. He collected the top smallbore mark with a 573 and finished the day with a 583. Junior Owen Goad capped of a solid weekend with an 1155 on Sunday. He turned in the top air rifle mark with a 586. Goad added a 569 in smallbore. Senior Sam Payne finished third overall with a final tally of 1154. Junior Mackenzie Van Patten, who led the Gamecocks on Saturday at Murray State, wrapped up the weekend with an 1153. She finished right behind Goad in air rifle with a 584. Michael Dietz rounded out the Jax State score with an 1139.
JSU will be looking for its tenth overall championship in the OVC in two weeks at MSU. The Gamecocks claimed their 11th OVC Rifle Championship last season.
