
Gamecock Rifle Aims For Another OVC Crown

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State rifle team will aim for its tenth overall Ohio Valley Conference rife championship this weekend as Morehead State will host the 2021 OVC Rifle Championships on Saturday and Sunday at the Button Range on MSU campus.
The first OVC championship event of the 2020-21 athletic year, due to COVID-19, will begin with the smallbore competition on Saturday, followed by the air rifle portion of the championship on Sunday. The Gamecocks will be looking to defend their 2020 air rifle championship after claiming that part of the championship last year at UT Martin. Jax State will be looking to claim its first overall title since 2015. In 2015, JSU won both portions of the championship.
Year-in and Year-out the OVC is stacked with nationally-ranked programs and the 2020-21 season is no different as the Racers of Murray State, who have won four of the last five overall titles, enters the weekend as the highest ranked squad in the league at No. 10 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association's weekly poll. The Gamecocks maintain the No. 15 spot ahead of No. 16 Morehead State. UTM rounds out the top-20 at No. 20. The Eagles will be looking to repeat as they topped the Racers for the overall title in 2020.
JSU begins the weekend in the Bluegrass State averaging an aggregate score of 4637, including an average of 2335 in air rifle and a 2302 in smallbore. The Gamecocks' best outing of the season came against UTM in November with a final tally of 4659, which was bolstered by a season-best score in air rifle od 2346.
Junior Mackenzie Van Patten and senior Sam Payne will be looking to gain All-OVC honors status for the third consecutive year after earning conference honors the past two seasons. Junior Michael Dietz and sophomore Kaila Jones have the opportunity to be back-to-back all-conference selections.
