JACKSON, Miss. – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up a trip to Mississippi with a pair of wins over Jackson State on Friday. The women won 4-3, while the men earned a 6-1 victory in their first contest of the year.

The Gamecock women claimed the doubles point in two consecutive sets, and secured the match by taking the next three of four singles contests. Despite a loss at No. 5 in the third decision of the afternoon,
Harriet Hamilton at No. 2 and
Dariana Prato at No. 4 took the first pair of points, and
Malin Buechner nailed down the win with a three-set victory at No. 3.

Buechner dropped the first set of her match with Robin Alston, 6-1, but rallied to win the second and third sets 6-1 and 6-2, respectively.

The Jax State men saw their first action of the year after their opening pair of matches this season were postponed and canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

Despite a loss at No. 1 doubles,
Joaquin Vallejo and Maj Tomas won 6-2 at No. 3, and
Guillermo Agost and
Jordi Blanchar outdueled Jackson State's No. 2 team of Hiromu Ikeda and Fritz Jacobs 6-4 to go up by one.

JSU took the next five singles contests in a row to nearly sweep the match. Vallejo, Agost,
Aljaz Kaplja,
Maj Tomac and Blanchar each won in straight sets at No. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6.
Thomas Norwood's matchup at No. 4 singles with Agustin Agosto went to three sets, but the Jacksonville State junior fell 11-9 in the final stanza.

Jax State returns home Wednesday, Feb. 3 to host Auburn University at Montgomery at 2 p.m.
