JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State men's tennis team posted a 6-1 win over Auburn University at Montgomery on Wednesday at the JSU Tennis Courts.

As a squad, JSU improved to 10-2 in singles play and 5-1 in doubles action with the near-sweep of the Warhawks.

Aljaz Kaplja,
Maj Tomac and
Joaquin Vallejo each tallied victories to improve to 2-0 for the season.

Jax State began the day by taking all three doubles set for the first point of the match. The Gamecocks then claimed five of the six singles point to earn the win in their first home match of the year.

Blanchar began singles play with a two-set sweep of Jonathan Judy-Hansen at No. 6, and newcomer Tomac defeated Giovanni Bellio 6-3, 6-1.
Thomas Norwood earned his first win of the season with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over David Mulas at No. 4 to secure the match-point for JSU.

Kaplja added the Gamecocks' fifth point with a two-set win over Nono Portugal at No. 3, and Vallejo finished up the contest with a three-set victory over Muhamad Bedwan at No. 1. JSU's lone loss of the day was a hard-fought matchup at No. 2 between
Guillermo Agost and AUM's Joao Guariente. Agost won 6-3 in the second set after dropping the first, but the Warhawk rallied back in the third set to win 6-1.

Wednesday's women's tennis match with the Owls was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

Both Gamecock squads go on the road Sunday, Feb. 7 to take on Kennesaw State. The men's match begins at 11 a.m. and the women are set to follow at 3 p.m. The two teams return home Wednesday, Feb. 10 to host North Alabama.
