JACKSONVILLE – Eastern Kentucky scored an early goal in each of the two halves to spoil Jacksonville State's senior day with a 2-0 win on Sunday at the JSU Soccer Field.
The Gamecocks dropped to 6-9-2 overall and 2-5-1 in ASUN action, the Colonels improved to 8-8 on the season and level at 4-4 against ASUN competition. Jax State will wrap up the 2021 regular season on Friday, traveling to in-state rival North Alabama on Friday, Oct. 22. Match time is set for 7 p.m. on the UNA campus.
EKU posted a break away goal nine minutes into the contest for the first goal and added a cushion with its second goal three minutes deep in the second half. EKU's Audrey Anderson got behind the JSU backline for the opening goal, while Nerea De Diego netted the insurance goal. EKU finished with a 14-3 advantage in total shots against JSU with half of the shots on goal.
Freshman
Kylie Wells recorded two of JSU's scoring chances, while junior
Reilly Kucko added the other shot.
"I was disappointed in the performance. I thought we looked flat from the get-go and I think it is a lot of exhaustion and having to rely on the same players week-in and week-out every weekend. Not having a rotation is catching up with us. The overall performance was poor," said head coach
Neil Macdonald.
It was the final outing on the home pitch for five Gamecocks as they were honored prior to the start of the contest. The program honored
Alicia Pallister,
Reilly Kucko,
Auset Gibbs,
Cephana Deane and
Julia Papa.
"They are a good group and they have been committed to the program. I thought Reilly (Kucko) had an excellent game again and she has been super consistent all season.
Julia Papa stepped in with the injuries that we have had. I thought she had a solid 90 minutes out there today. Auset (Gibbs) was solid today when we needed her and
Cephana Deane played well," added Macdonald.
The Gamecocks will have an extra day to regroup with a Friday match this week.
"I think the biggest thing for us right now is recovery and we have to get our legs back," said Macdonald.
The UNA match will be available on ESPN+.
