JACKSONVILLE – Junior
Cephana Deane collected a pair of goals to lead Jacksonville State past Stetson, 4-2, on a soggy Sunday at the JSU Soccer Field.
The Gamecocks, who have now completed its four ASUN Conference matches against their East Division members on the 2021 schedule and do not count in the overall ASUN standings, picked up their sixth win (6-6-1) of the season and posted the second win against ASUN foes coupled with last Sunday's road win at Kennesaw State. The Hatters had a tough weekend in the state of Alabama after falling to North Alabama on Thursday along with falling to JSU, fell to 5-7-1 overall.
Deane put the Jax State on the scoreboard in the 15th minute after drilling a shot from the left side that curled past the Hatters' keeper in the upper righth and corner of the net. Junior
Reilly Kucko was credited with her first assist on the season on the scoring play. Freshman
Kylie Wells added the second of three JSU goals in the first 45 minutes that mirrored Deane's shot on a free kick opportunity. Wells' ball found the lower corner of the net for the second goal seven minutes after JSU's first goal.
Wells added to her point total after assisting freshman Nyeemah Prescod Beckles right before the intermission. Beckles headed the ball into the net from Wells in the 42nd minute of the opening half. The goal was her fourth of the season and shared team honors for goals scored this season until Deane's second goal of the contest in the 60th minute. Deane, from Ajax, Ontario, Canada recorded her fifth goal of the season and third in the last two matches, after freshman
Brogan Burrow set her up with a shot at the top of penalty box. Her goal game the Gamecocks some breathing room after the Hatters broke up the shutout in the 53rd minute.
"Cephana (Deane) had a great game, scoring two brilliantly taken goals and put in a really strong performance overall," said head coach
Neil Macdonald.
The Gamecocks worked the gameplan to perfection throughout the match, controlling the ball and creating scoring chances. JSU had a plus-three advantage in shots taken, 13-10, including a 10-1 mark in the opening half. Deane and Kucko finished with two shots on goal in the result to pace the JSU lineup that has had to adjust throughout the season. On of the adjustments on Sunday was the insertion of junior
Kimberly McPhearson, who made her first start and the quality minutes the Gamecocks got off the bench on Sunday.
"I give a lot of credit to our girls because some things have not gone our way and some tough luck with injuries, but they keep battling out there," added Macdonald. I though
Brogan Burrow gave us quality time off the bench and was a factor out there today."
The Gamecocks return to action next weekend with a road trip to Conway, Arkansas to face the Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas on Thursday night before welcoming the Knights of Bellarmine to the JSU campus on Sunday, Oct. 10. Match time for the UCA contest is set for 7 p.m.
