Box Score JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State University women's basketball team suffered its first road loss of the season, falling to Davidson 58-69 on Sunday afternoon.
The Gamecocks fell to 1-1 on the season after the loss as the Wildcats earned their first win of the season.
Three players scored in double-figures for JSU, led by 15 from
Imari Martin – the games leading scorer.
Shawnta Shawn added a career-high 13 points off the bench while Kianna Johnson contributed 10 points.
Davidson scored a bucket just 15 seconds into the contest, taking an early 2-0 lead.
Imari Martin responded for the Gamecocks on the ensuing possession by draining a three to go up 3-2 less than 30 seconds later. Davidson used a 6-0 run to go up 8-3 with 6:20 to go in the first quarter. A jumper from
Keiara Griffin quickly cut the deficit to three, 5-8, but an 8-2 run for Davidson put the Gamecocks behind 16-7 after the first.
Madison McCoy drained a long jumper two and a half minutes into the second period, cutting the deficit to seven, 9-16. Davidson pushed the lead to 13, 22-9, before free-throws from
Kaiya Burnett and
Shawnta Shaw trimmed the deficit to single-digits, 22-13 at the 5:39 mark. Consecutive layups inside from Shaw kept the Gamecocks within 10 points with 3:46 to go before half. Davidson extended its lead to 14, 32-18 with 19 seconds to go. A pair of free-throws from Martin cut the deficit to 12, 32-20 right before half.
JSU opened the second half on a 13-2 run, cutting the deficit to one, 34-33 with 6:24 to go in the third quarter. After Davidson extended the lead to six, 39-33, a three-pointer from Martin quickly trimmed the lead to three, 36-39. Davidson closed out the quarter on an 11-4 run and carried a 50-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
Much like the quick start out of halftime, JSU opened the fourth period on a 6-0 run that included four points from
Kiana Johnson. Another jumped from Johnson put the Gamecocks just two points behind the Wildcats, 52-50 with 7:14 to go in the game. A 12-4 run for Davidson over the next six minutes put the Gamecocks behind, 65-54. A layup from Johnson ended a two-minute scoring drought and trimmed the lead to single-digits, 65-56 with 1:09 to go. Shaw added a layup in the final seconds, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats went on to win, 68-58.
Davidson narrowly edged the Gamecocks on the boards, 38-37 in the contest. Gavin hauled in 10 rebounds for JSU, the second double-figure mark for her this season. Davidson shot 44.6 percent from the field while the Gamecocks finished just 34.5 percent.
