Vanderbilt Pulls Away From Jax State

NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt pulled away from Jacksonville State to secure a 71-61 win in women's basketball action inside Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Gamecocks will enter the Thanksgiving break at 2-2 on the season and will return to action on Friday, Nov. 26 against Indiana State in the opening contest of the Georgia Southern Classic. Tip off from Statesboro, Georgia is set for 2:30 p.m. The Commodores improved to 3-2 overall.

After Jax State trimmed a nine-point deficit down to one trip down the floor at 54-52 a minute into the final period, the Commodores pushed the lead to eight points with just over seven minutes left and eventually a 10-point cushion with 3:47 left on the game clock after a 13-5 scoring run. VU would eventually take its largest lead of the second half at 70-58 at the 1:40 mark of the fourth quarter. In a tightly contested match up throughout the day between the two clubs, VU its largest lead of 13 points in the second quarter, while JSU's largest advantage was three points early in the contest. The Commodores looked to pull away from the Gamecocks in with a 15-point second quarter but JSU timed the deficit to 34-29. JSU also trailed by six after three quarters of action.

JSU was led by senior Imari Martin's 15-point output after she knocked down four of JSU's seven three pointers on the day. Martin finished the day 5-of-12 from the field in 27 minutes of action. Junior Nekiyah Thompson also finished with double figures in the scoring column with 11 points. Thompson's stat line included six rebounds and four assists. Senior Kyra Williams pitched in nine points off the bench, while Keiara Griffin added six points.

The Commodores had four of their five starters record double figures in scoring, led by 16 points from Brinae Alexander. Jordyn Cambridge and Iyana Moore registered 14 points. Cambridge turned in a double-double with 10 rebounds to lead VU's 48-26 rebounding edge over the Gamecocks.

Following the Gamecocks' match up with the Sycamores of ISU on Friday, they will conclude the trip to south Georgia against South Carolina State on Saturday, Nov. 27. Tip off is set for 12 p.m.
