TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Jacksonville State baseball team started its eight-game road trip with a 7-2 loss to No. 23 Alabama in midweek action at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
The win secures the season sweep of the two-game set between the two clubs after the Crimson Tide downed JSU earlier in the season in Jacksonville. The Gamecocks dropped to 5-7 on the season, while UA improved to 12-2 overall.
Jax State's road trip will send them to the southern part of the state as it visits Mobile, Alabama for a weekend series with South Alabama. The three-game series begins on Friday evening at Eddie Stankey Field on the USA campus. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ and the first two contests will be carried on the Gamecock Sports Network.
The Crimson Tide took advantage of eight walks combined by the five Gamecock pitchers on Wednesday along with three UA hitters reaching via hit-by-pitch, leading to five of the Crimson Tide's seven runs. JSU starter
Isaiah Magwood (0-1) went 3.0 innings and fanned six but got in trouble with a pair of walks. UA touched him for two runs on one hit in the two-run third inning.
UA extended its lead in the fourth inning on two RBI singles by William Hamiter and a two-run single by Zane Denton. Hamiter finished the night with three hits with a second RBI single in the fifth.
JSU junior
Isaac Alexander solved UA starter, Connor Shamblin (2-0) twice as he was the only Gamecock with multiple hits. Alexander had a single in his first plate appearance and a double in fifth. He scored on
Derrick Jackson, Jr.'s double to the gap in right center.
Shamblin went six innings, scattered three hits and recorded six strikeouts. UA's bullpen allowed one run over the final three innings. Senior
Alex Webb, who started his career with Alabama, started the seventh with a solo home run. It was the first of the season for Webb and the 12th in a JSU uniform. Junior
Zeth Malcom had a pinch hit single for JSU's fifth hit of the night.
