JSU Drops Sunday's Series Finale at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – Jacksonville State dropped the final game of the weekend series with South Alabama, falling 7-5 on Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field in Mobile, Alabama.

The Gamecocks (7-8) clinched the series on Saturday with an 8-2 win and recording career win No. 600 for head coach Jum Case. Jax State opened the weekend on the gulf coast with a 11-2 win over USA (7-8).

USA erased a 5-2 deficit after four innings with four solo home runs in each of the next three innings, including the tying and go-ahead wind-aided home runs a three-run seventh. USA's Jase Dalton handcuffed the Gamecocks over the final 5.1 innings, scattering four hits and collecting seven strikeouts to earn the win. JSU pressured the Jaguars throughout the game on the bases but could not get a key hit to expand the early lead and make a comeback bid as it stranded 10 on the bases in the setback.

Senior Alex Webb keyed JSU's lineup on Sunday with a four-hit performance, including a big two-out, two-RBI double to centerfield in the Gamecocks' three-run fourth that gave them the lead after trailing 2-1 after two innings and equalizing in the third inning with a Trever Andrews RBI single. Andrews, who had three hits on Saturday, finished the weekend with five hits after two more on Sunday. Junior Alex Strachan added an RBI in the affair.

USA's Ethan Wilson matched Webb with four hits and two RBI to snap a five-game losing skid for the Jaguars.

JSU's Jackson Tavel was tagged with the loss out of the bullpen in 1.1 innings of work. Gamecock starter Colin Casey tossed the first 3.2 innings and tallied three strikeouts.

The Gamecocks will now turn their attention to Ohio Valley Conference action as they travel to Murray, Kentucky next weekend to begin the 30-game conference slate. Friday's OVC opener is set for 3 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
