Gamecocks Win Bash At The Beach For Third-Straight Year

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Jacksonville State men's golf team used a dominant performance to win its third-straight Bash at the Beach Collegiate hosted by Appalachian State on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks were under par in all three rounds on the par-72, 6,800-yard Surf Golf and Beach Club, placed all five of their players in the top 12 of the 60-player field and were led by medalist Quim Vidal Mora to defend the back-to-back tournament titles they won there in 2019 and 2020.
It is also the Gamecocks' second-straight win after claiming the Sea Palms Invitational on March 6. They have also finished third or higher in all four tournaments in the 2021 season.
Vidal Mora tied UConn's Jared Nelson for medalist honors after shooting an 8-under 208 over the two-day, 54-hole event. A native of Barcelona, Spain, Vidal Mora shot rounds of 73 and 68 on Monday before turning in a 5-under 67 in Tuesday's final round to storm into the lead.
He led the field in par-4 scoring at 4-under, while making the second-most birdies in the field with six during the event to pick up his first career collegiate win.
The Gamecocks' opened the tournament with a 5-under 283 on Monday, getting the 36-hole opening day off on the right foot. They answered with a 7-under 281 in the afternoon round before their final-round 279 gave them a 21-under score for the event. They beat second-place UConn by eight shots and were 10 ahead of third-place and host ASU.
Senior Jesus Dario Montenegro finished just one shot off of the lead with a 7-under 209 that tied him for third in the field. The Buenos Aires, Argentina, native opened play with rounds of 68 and 70 before his final-round 71 on Tuesday.
Junior Maximo Portais, also a native of Buenos Aires, finished sixth with a 3-under 213. He carded a 69 in Monday's opening round and had a 2-under 70 on Tuesday to bounce back from his second-round 74. He was second in the field in par-5 scoring.
Junior Jackson Singletary claimed a Top 10 finish in a tie for 10th, thanks to his even-par 216 for the tournament. The native of Alabaster, Ala., improved his score by one shot in each round, opening with rounds of 73 and 72 before finishing with a 71 on Tuesday.
Junior Patricio Freundt-Thurne tied for 12th with a 1-over 217, bouncing back from an opening round 74 on Monday morning. The Lima, Peru, native shot 71 in Monday's afternoon round before closing play with a 72 on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks next event will be March 28-30 at Mercer's National Intercollegiate, which will be played at The National Course in Lake Oconee, Ga.
